I've been looking for a Dyna for a short time, I will be looking at a Dyna Wide Glide (near the east coast) that is about 10 years old with 15K miles it has been garage kept is in excellent condition except there are several areas where the chrome is peeling or pitted.
Areas include the rocker box, timing cover, top of triple tree etc. What causes chrome to peel, is this chemical, salt, road debris, lack of care or is it possible that all these areas are due to poor manufacturing?
I have only seen pictures and the owner has been emphatic/very upfront about the chrome issue, saying the bike is great except for the chrome.
Price seems good if all I need to do is replace the bad chrome or does this suggest the bike has been neglected?
Thanks for your thoughts
Replacement covers are not expensive if you browse ebay, etc. If that is the only thing wrong I'd continue checking the bike out. 10 yrs old w/ 15k miles = 1500 miles a year. That bike sat a LOT more than it was ridden. I might be weary as non-use can cause just as many problems as burning off a rear tire once a month.
my 2000 fxdwg had only 19.000k on it when I bought it 18 months ago from a dealer. It seems like whoever owned it before me must have had it for bragging rights, cause it is in A1 condition, I had a reputable service mech. go over it & it's all good. the only thing that I've had to replace were the throttle cables that were rusty & snapped on my way home from work one night, I guess from the previous owner washing it more than riding it. So I guess I picked a good 2nd hand one...just be carefull...IMO
i have a 5 yr old wideglide no rust, and i wash weekly i believe he could of washed and not dried correctly, also being in the east coast, is your problem on anything cars trk, ect if i were you i would shop on ebay or someother site i buy a bike from the west coast,
