Torx will go into a TP and appear to fit but be loose enough to cause stripping. TP won't go into a torx, so its easy to tell which you have. I always try my TP first and only if it won't fit do I go for the Torx. But on my 07 and 09 nearly everything is TP. On the 2000 it seems some are Torx and some TP, but the latter could have been changed by a PO. I don't know when HD switched (but I do know they call everything "Torx" in their service manuals).

Oh, and the derby is actually T25P (torx plus). A T25 wobbles like a 90 year old man, a T27 still has play, but a T25P fits perfectly.

Sears sells a nice set of SK Torx Plus which include a T27P and they're having a sale today if you order online.

Wow! Torx Plus! I never heard of it. Thank you very much. You are one of the many reasons that this is an excellent site! I stripped what I thought was a torx T27 on a fender brace of a FatBoy. I ordered a manual but don't have it yet. The T27 fit but felt slightly loose. I wonder...

I am going to disagree, if you look at the shape of the torx on the HD they are not torx plus, torx plus look more like a polydrive, more squared off.

Where does it specify t25 for the derby cover torx? I can't find that, or any other torx size anywhere in the manual?
Makes sense a T25P would fit a T27, and if it works for you great, might be a good idea to buy a T25P for T27s to keep from stripping them out.
All torx are loose fitting and the recommendation for the impact driver is a good one as well, just don't smack the hell out of it.

Get a T27.

As is your right. Several indy's I know have confirmed this as well as my own experience. If you wish, try a T25P in the derby and see what you think.

I'm happy with my experience and the lack of stripped out bolts without resorting to an impact driver, but to each their own.

I've been using the same set of Craftsman for a few years now and they work great.

Says T27 in the instructions that came with the Derby cover that I bought to replace the stock one. I bought some decent Torx bits (Britool) and the T27 seems pretty tight.

Todd,

Not shure what kinda derby cover you have mounted.

The 2003 Anniversary derby cover I've mounted on my FXD2003 has the T27 Torx screws though!

According to this Instruction Sheet many more derby covers have the T27 screws....

Torx

Torx Plus

I'll be damned if I can find a torx plus anywhere on my 07', are you using a T40P on a T45?
Like we both say, if it works for you then great.

CB

Always wonder what the different drives used on screws were, here is a good description.

Lowe's has a Kobalt set of torx sockets with the T27 in it. Lifetime warranty so you only have to buy 1 set.
