For those that point to ATF use in transfer cases and transmissions in cars and trucks; the automotive industry was plagued with failures in transfer cases and manual transmissions resulting from too thin lubes being used. They decided to switch rather than fight widespread ineptitude. Decades ago most equipment was designed with ATF in mind. This was accomplished by using wider wear surfaces to reduce the loads to a level that ATF could handle.

Here's another hat in the ring:
Shell Rotella T-6. It's a 5W-40 oil, full synthetic, reasonably priced, available at any Wal*Mart, an it carries the JASO-MA rating for wet clutches.

I have a 03 Road King with 235K miles on it - most of that with ATF in the primary - original chain & adjuster shoe - the only things I've replaced in there is the clutch plates - once at 150 K & the stator & rotor - a couple times

atf in primary case
atf in primary/ What is in a modern front wheel drive transmission in a car? Hyvo type chains, clutch packs. Whats in a primary? Hyvo type chains and clutch/ I change it every other oil change. packs. I have been riding Harleys since 1988 and have used ATF in all of the primary cases. Easier shifting and finding neutral. Also a nicer clutch engagement.
