neutral between gears

Put it in third gear with the engine off. the shift lever should have equal amounts of springed play up and down. If not the shifter pawl is off center. It effects all gears. If you look at the tranny behind the inner side case there is a 1/4" lock nut and an adjustment screw. It take patience but it makes a big difference when it come to missing gears.

If your finding neutral between anything other than first and second gear, something strange is going on. Does the neutral light come on between the upper gears? If not, your not really finding neutral, your in between gears. Sounds like your not stabbing the shifter hard enough... jmo
exactly right..i just wanted to know if this is normal? so i really have to ride it like i stole it? just when im puttin around takin it easy on her is when it mostly happens.. if i shift hard it never happens.. just happend to notice it alot more here lately.. thanks guys

2000 TC88,,,,If I don't snap my shifts in gear I will get caught in between gears and when it does go in gear it will chatter as the dogs hook up,,,it gives me the willeys when that happens.
I've been shifting ATV's to long and going easy in the shift lever has gotten to be a habit that I'm trying to break.
