Intermittent P0505 error, dead speedo
It seems to occur when riding the day after a big rain (the bike being out in the rain). I start out in the morning, everything works fine. Then I notice when I pull in the clutch at a light, I stall out. Shortly after that, my speedo goes dead. I sometimes get a solid "check engine" light for a few minutes.
Last time it happened, I dropped by the dealer, he checked the error codes and got only P0505. He hooked up the bike to check the wiring and it all checked out. After re-connecting stuff after using the tester, it worked again. It worked fine for weeks.
A couple of weeks ago, agin after getting caught in the rain, same thing. But it all sprung back to life by itself after 10 minutes of riding.
We got a big rain yesterday, and this morning the pattern repeated. Intermittently, the speedo sprung back to life and the idle was fine. But when I parked it at work, it was dead. I came back after work, all is well, works fine.
After reading older posts and such, seems there is a problem where this thing can "stick". Any thoughts on what I can do to check this and/or remedy short of bringing it in?
This is on a 2007 Street Bob, 20k miles.
The speedometer signal is an extremely important input for the Delphi fuel
injection system. The ECM monitors throttle position and speed signal inputs in
order to properly maintain the set idle speed. If the ECM loses the speed signal
for any reason while the throttle is closed, the ECM assumes the vehicle is
stopped and will adjust the idle air control counts to bring engine rpm to the set
idle speed. This could set a P0505 code and adversely affect engine idle.
There is also a screw that adjusts your throttle stop on the intake. Check that as well.
