Does wrapping the head pipes with exhaust tape make any noticable difference in how a bike runs or sounds? I'm thinking of wrapping the headpipes on my thunderheader mainly to cut down the heat on my *** when the bike is stopped in traffic. It also wouldn't bother me if it quieted this thing down a little bit.And yes wrapping them just because it looks cool wouldn't be a bad thing just curious if it does anything else.
Ed, has no other effect, wont muffle the sound, wont make it run better, but it will make it cooler, and your skin wont stick to it! I have done a bunch of wrapped pipes, spray the wrapping get it pretty wet, (always take the pipes off, and mount the bracket in a vise, so you can get away the way around the pipe,) one wrap at the start and band it, or radiator hose clamp, the cover about half of the wrap each time, at the end, do two wraps on top of each other, and clamp or band again. The wrap will smoke like crazy the first three or 4 times you ride it, and will smoke a little after washing or getting wet, but it looks cool, and it's sure easier on the skin.
To add a little to what shooter64 said: I soaked the wrap instead of spraying it. You definitely want it wet so it'll be easier to wrap. If you use hose clamps get the ones that are all stainless steel, including the screw. Once the wrap dries, spray it with the header wrap paint stuff. It'll hold up longer, or at least look better longer.
I want to wrap my pipes twice. They are super hot. Definatly spray them with
the high temp stuff cause i did not and the wrap looks worn and old and its only
two weeks old. washing it and water makes it fade considerably. so next time i wrap
it will be twice and sprayed.
I dumbed the mufflers and heat shields (I don't really like chrome exhaust's [:'(] so this is what I came up with. The pipes just took some time with the grinder to make. Oh and in that picture that is the last time my bike has been washed...5k miles ago
