Just installed the Ricor Intiminators on my FXR last night. Fully drained both 39mm tubes. Front end is off of a 99 FXD Super Glide, which the manual says requires 9.2oz per tube. I followed Ricors installation instructions and filled each tube with 15oz of Amsoil STL fluid per side. This seems pretty full to me but here goes.
The front end seems pretty damn stiff. It hardly moves at all when braking. I think its a little to harsh. Can I drain out a couple oz's from each tube drain hole to "soften" it up a bit?
Thanks.
I'd start with the manufacturer's recommended fluid level and adjust from there. You might also consider chopping the spacer down 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch to compensate for the height of the Intiminator. Mine had metal spacers that were very hard to cut so I replaced them with PVC pipe, worked great.
Yeah you should measure the actual oil level (from the top of the tube), don't just rely on the number of ounces. Someone posted the measurement method awhile ago, perhaps Mudd. Using a shorter PCV pipe to replace the spacer (reduces pre-load) is a good tip, that's how I have mine set up.
OK, I will try to tear apart and measure from the top, but I dont' have any spacers in the tubes that can be modified. I am thinking your talking about front ends with lowering kits in them??

On my 08 Fatbob's stock front end there was a 6 inch metal tube sitting on top of the spring, just under the cap. And yes, measuring the fluid level from the top is the procedure in the service manual.
Don't know how the 99 front end is set up, but my 08 has a tube between the spring and cap that, when you put the cap on, preloads the front end. Since the ricors take up space there, most shorten the tube (cut it shorter) or replace it with a shorter piece of PVC pipe, which I think is a lot easier to work with.
