Default New motor mount, removed shims = smooth

I attempted to swap out my front motor mount because it looked like crap and thought it would cure my wobble to which I still can't find the source of. Well it didn't cure the wobble, but the vibs are practically gone and I think my bike is the smoothest I've ever felt it. I also removed the shims I had in there. As smooth as it is I can't imagine the shims making it better right now. I can read signs in the mirrors for at least an 1/8th mile and can tell the shapes for a while after that. Cruising @ 70+ mph I can't believe how much smoother it is. Also before the mirrors would be worthless from the mid RPM range up, but not anymore and that's with 16 inch apes. Usable mirrors and no more vibes. Here are some pics of how crappy the old mount looked.

Notice the difference in height. New is on the Right and Old on the left.

And the back side

I shimmed mine when I installed the new mount. I did not want to shim an already stretched and sacked out mount. You said you had about 9900 miles on the old mount...are you hoping for better life out of this new mount or do plan to replace it in another 10K miles? If the mount was stretched to the cross member as you tightened the front mount bolts I would expect the same life as the old mount. You can really see how much the bottom air gap has opened up from the rubber stretching, as this happens the top air gap disappears and makes contact with the top mount bracket (bottomed out) causing the vibration. If you eliminate the forward stretch on installation, the downward stretch will likely take longer to happen. What fatigues and fails first...a relaxed rubberband or a stretched rubberband?

I just replaced mine also, at about the same miles. Didn't notice until I had my old one out but it was skewed sideways about half an inch, I hadn't shimmed it and had never had any vibration. I've put a new one on and now at low revs I've got vibration, Its getting less as I ride it.
What sort on wobble do you have Jaron? I had front end wobble at 120km/hr plus when I changed to wideglide trees, 21" front and lowered rear shocks a while back. A slight change in rake and trail will fixed it. You can check this if your rear shocks are at the lowest setting put them at the highest. If it works but you want the rear low then just lower the front forks, or slide them through the trees. Mine has changed now but it worked for me at the time, when I was sitting on it bottom of the frame was level with the ground.

Is the part number revised from the 08 fxdb stock number? If so, what was the part number you ordered?

Yeah I thought about that when I was installing it. I think I put them in and took them out like 3 or 4 times. Maybe I'll put them back in today and see if there is a difference.

The wobble feels like the front. It started when I put on a new rear. I have a 21 up front and went to a lower profile tire for the rear a 170/50/17. I thought about raising the shock up, but forgot to buy a spanner when I was at HD the other day (2 hrs away). I've also slide my forks up about 3/8 of an inch to make up for the 21 front. It's weird. If I strech out and put my heels on my forwards it starts to wobble. Sometimes a bump over 70 mph will start it. It's controllable, I just don't like it and it was never there. I'm thinking it has to be the rear tire, or the offset of the 21 front and lower profile rear gave me the wobble.

That is the p/n for the front mount. The rear is 47564-99. I can verify as I have one sitting here waiting to be installed. They look the same but different p/n's.

Jaron & Vic,

Just a thought: why only replace the front mount? Wouldn't it be beter to replace both front and rear?

Anxious to hear your opinions!

Default cure the wobble

try a set of Sputhe Motor Isolators.
installed a set on my Dyna over 100,000 miles ago, perfect at the dragstrip or Bonneville.

i am considering doing this.it is time
mine are original and they have 45,000 miles I have noticed an increase in vibration on my pegs.

is it a pain to replace the rear mount and is it worth doing both at once
I also think i will look into the sputhe isolators if they are that much better.
If they are simply replacement isolators i assume they will work with my true track mounts.
