I changed out my buckhorns for risers and drag bars and went through two riser heights (4.5" to 8") and two drag bar widths (27-3/8" to 30.5") to get the cables back to being the right length for my set up.

I ended up with 8 inch risers with 1.5" pullback combined with 30.5" wide drag bars with about 5" pullback.

This combination approximated my buckhorn's cable length requirements, but is much more comfortable, my hands are now aligned with my wrists resulting in way better control and comfort.

In reality, the 4.5" risers gave me the best handling by far, but the cables ended up being too long. Taking the easy route, I just added higher risers (still too long of cables) so went with wider bars.

In the end, I could have just ordered T-bars, but I needed to experiment first to see what height, width and pull-back was needed.

I'm happy with about 4.5 to 8 inches of rise and about 5 to 9 inches of pullback with about 28 to 30 inches of width. Just put in some poly bushings if going to higher risers to minimize flex and twist.

I've read on different threads that you can get 12" ape hangers on your FXD without changing cables and wires. I've heard different opinions on the 14" apes, but pretty sure when you go to 16" (my plan) you'll need new cables and maybe (heard different here too!) wire extension kit.

Hope this helps.

www.handlebar cables.com lets you plug in different bar configurations and tells you which one of LA Choppers cable kits fits that bar. So obviously if their stock replacement kit fits, your stock cables will also work.
