Yeah ... gotten started on the break in, after a hiccup off the bat ...

First start had some really loud valve clatter ... shut down and after pondering what might be causing it began to question whether I might have switched the pushrods ...

Turns out they were switched on the rear cylinder ... after getting them straightened out the valvetrain was still noisier than before, but nothing like the racket on the first start ....

I checked the oil (around 1/2) and added a little Marvel Mystery Oil additive .... Got a stethiscope to see if I could pinpoint the noise and after it ran for a bit, the noise began to attenuate ... it seemed as it warmed up it kind of reverted to the 'Singer sewing machine' ticking ....

Seems like the SOTP is giving me solid torque and power improvement ... just been going easy on it for now ... give it another couple of fill ups and then start flogging it ... unless the valve noise doesn't permanently abate ....

At this point I'm thinking it must have been a sticking valve or something ... seems to be getting oil in the top end ... no leaks or anything .... Have checked temp log and does not seem to be running hot ...

Only other thing beside the valve clatter is a little more backfiring ... after I got back this evening listened to the motor a bit in the parking lot to see if I could hear any excess valve clatter noise ... revved it a few times and it backfired a few times on decel ... pretty spectacular flames out the exhaust pipe ...! Will check settings on Thunder Max for decel AFR ....

Well, will give it a few days, check compression ... monitor the situation .... More to follow ....

Default Break in

Am pleased to report that the valve noise is pretty much a thing of the past ... got just a little kind of 'diesel' sound this morning, abated after a couple of minutes ... when I started it this afternoon, no valve noise ... this evening, same--no noise ...

So, currently at about 85 break in miles ... so far, I am really pleased ... but, have not gotten on it to see what it'll do ... yet ...!
