I parked one of my non HD bikes behind my truck one day. Wife went out and, got in the truck and backed into the bike. She came running in about to burst into tears. When I went out to look at it, she had stood the thing up. (I have no idea how she managed to pick up the bike, a 1980 KZ1000 shafty) I could not find any damage except the kick stand was badly bent to the point the bike looked like it would fall at any minute. I was lucky.

Hes got shelter, I got progressive. I filed a claim with both insurance companies already so I imagine they will call Monday to set up a time to send someone to look at it. I am only 10 minutes from a fairly large Harley dealer so I think I am going to have them look it over to make sure the frame or forks arent bent.

Hopefully I dont get screwed too bad over this deal but I have a feeling I will. I am already out $220 tow bill and two destroyed helmets. (both less than 3 months old)

Has anyone ever hired a lawyer in a situation like this? Small claims is $4k max and no lawyer needed. I'm afraid I will end up getting what I can get out of his insurance and then taking him to small claims for the rest.

What a PITA!!! all because some idiot wasn't paying attention then then proceeded to leave the scene.

Sorry to hear about this.....Went through a similar situation back in July with an 08 SB. Mine was a Hit but no Run. My wife was on the back and we both went flying when some lady made a left turn into us. I have Progressive and they paid for everything. They claimed the bike was totaled as Harley's estimate was 80% or better of the book value. They paid for the bike which was an average of two different Book companies ( I forget their names) plus tax. Then they paid for every last accessories and every last nut and bolt that I had installed. List prices for everything. Got a nice check and went shopping. Picked up a nice Lowrider and was able to get a few accessories. If the insurance company does not pay for all of the damages I would definitely ask the Jerk to pay the difference and if he refuses definitely Small Claims Court.... I think the days of beating the crap out of people is pretty much over. They tend to call the cops on you and jail aint no fun......Good Luck.

Cool Jerks are everywhere, push till you get, or sue

All, this kind of thing is world wide and seems to be part of the education of todays youth, screw'em 101 or something. I had some guy do a uturn in a truck over my KLE (thank god it was not my mini-glide), anyway he has his insurance company lying about the whole thing and I gotta sue.

Well litigation seems the way to go, hold the driver to the letter of the law.

Good luck with the repairs.

Wife and I came out of my nephews youth football game today and find my bike had been run over. Yep some ******** ran over my bike and took off!! Ripped the face shield off my wifes brand new helmet and scratched the hell outta my helmet. Scratched the pipes, bent the bars, bent both forward controls, kickstand is bent, both levers bent, passenger peg bent, primary cover scratched, the front end appears to be cocked to one side but its hard to tell with the bent bars. The list goes on and on. I'd guess $3-4K minimum to get all this fixed at the HD dealer and book value on the bike is only around 5k.

I filed a police report and I was actually able to track this guy down thru some of the youth football people and a description of the vehicle by a witness. He has full coverage through Shelter Insurance.

Do you think they will fix my bike back to the way it was? Or do you think I will get a huge headache and run around? Will they replace the aftermarket parts that were damaged? This is my first harley and i love the bike I am sickened by what happened. Just venting and I am also curious what I should expect trying to get a bike fixed through insurance.

splandman,

funny, my wife did the same thing, sorta.

she backed into my bike with a subaru forrester, and instead of coming in the house crying, she came in and asked me to move my bike so she could go out.

my bike didnt go over, she pushed it about 5 feet down the driveway before realizing what she was doing. it did shear the fork like bolt inside the triple tree pin hole. about 20 minutes into me trying to figure out why i could not unlock the front end, she then told me she hit the bike.

who lotta love in our house that day.

It should be stated value of the bike not blue book as he ran over your bike and his insurance is responsible. You need to take an inventory what is bent and broken and get the parts and prices. Do you have receipts from the previous owner, if not does the previous owner still have them? I had a similar hit and run on my 72 Dodge in a school parking lot and the Driver was identified etc. Their insurance wanted to give me $500 blue book for the car so I noted all the receipts and my labor to install the parts, sent it to them and they paid out 2K+ to repair it with "like kind and quality". It was a legitimate claim and the insurance company is responsible to cover up to the stated losses in their insureds policy.

I would report it to my insurance company with the cost of repair and let them deal with the other persons insurance.

Since he made the mistake of a hit and run which could be punishable I would try to take him to civil court if your still at a loss. One guy made me go down at a slow speed and it cost $3000 to fix it. scratchs cant be fixed, only replaced. Now you might change your mind of having all kind of aftermarket goodies, other than losing $ at resale, you also lose in a wreck.

"Don't get thrown in prison over a bike.......it's not worth it. Even if the guy ****ed you over by being a bitch......it's not worth years of your life to beat a person for 20 seconds. "
One good hit and run deserves another. Give it a year or two then, ski mask and club the *****.
Hope all turns out well for you.
