Default Primary chain stretching

How do you know when your primary chain is stretched enough so that it needs replacing and will a stretched primary chain chatter?

If it is well maintained, it will start whining around 100k miles. When your tensioner is most of the way out it is time for a new chain. I replace the clutch basket and compensator at the same time. Never heard one "chatter" exactly, but if they are real loose, they will hit the inside of the primary and that may be what you hear.

Thanks very much for the reply. I'm trying to figure out a metallic chatter coming from the primary case area. I replaced the friction discs on the clutch yesterday and checked the chain tension and compensater nut. Everything looks fine to me but it still makes the noise on the left side. I only hear it mostly when cruising and holding steady. Don't hear it during acceleration. I know sounds often travel on a bike and the origin might not be in the primary but that's what it sounds like.

My primary noise was the stock compensator, cured by the Screamin Eagle unit which has a much improved and tighter springpack.

It's an '01 FXD Superglide with 43,500 miles and now I'm wondering if the tensioner pad is worn or if the grooves are there from new.

It wears those grooves in there in the first 15000 or so, then the wear tapers off. It is normal.
