I had installed the SEST on my bike and rode it about a week or so and took it back and explained that it just wasn't tuned right. They reset it and said it was the best it could be.
Well after lots of reading and most of the posts here by some great posters I bought the SEST software and checked it out, I was not satisfied.
I talked with the head service writer at my local HD and he said after about an hour of conversation on all thing technical on these SEST's, he said bring it by and he would have a look see. He also said he could tweak it in about 20 minutes, well 2 hours later He gets it dialed in.
It is like he spanked this bike, as it will get up and scream now. I had to readjust my riding skills to the spontaneity to this Fat Bob as it acts like a different creature now.
I now have decided to install some SE 254 or SE259 cams with valve springs
Bottom line: make sure the tuner knows what he is doing with the Dyno set up
Depends who you want to do the tuning??? if you want the dealer to do it then SE or if you want a independent then maybe the Power commander would be more practical.
I had the dealer install the PC V, rush slip ons, and SE heavy breather. Completely different bike. Low end torque is greatly improved. Oh, and it sounds pretty good too! HP was about 72 and torque about 85 all in the 2000-4000 rpm range.
Careful which HD tuner you buy, the product line is very confusing. There has been a bunch of posts recently... Does that $450 include the cables and software?
Don't know which bike you have but if its a late model, look at the TTS tuning kit. The PCVs are good for making power cheap, but for on street diveability and power, you will be happier with something like the TTS kit. Well worth the few extra $$.
The V&H fuel pac is another option, it was $220. from forum sponsor Dennis Kirk, it's an easy install also. I put one on my brothers Softail in minutes and it works fine.
My brother doesn't ever do more then pipes and air so he did the V&H Fuel Pac, it's a simple install, easy program and inexpensive. If you plan doing more engine work a system that enables more input is a better choice, I went with the T-Max w/Auto tune and it's working good for me. I also heard the Mastertune is a good one as stated above.
