Default tire clearance issue?

All,

I have a 95 fxdl and the previous owner had mounted a 150 rear tire on it and i am thinking of either using 11" shocks or going with the burly slammer kit. Would there be a tire clearance issue with the fender if i lowered it? i am wondering if i need to go back to the stock 140 tire?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

what about getting some a fat friend(s) to come over and sit on the bike to "lower" it and then you can get an idea of might need to done. Fender rolling the inside lips (possibly)?

I am sure you have some fat peeps, Ohio was ranked #10 in '09 and #13 as fattest states: http://calorielab.com/news/2010/06/2...st-states-2010 jus' teasin'

You'll find the old MT or 130/90, the later MU or 140/85 and the latest 150/80 are all very similar in rolling diameter. So other than any sideways clearance issues created by tyre width there should be no problems with your 150.

Try this and check clearance:

Put the bike on a lift just high enough for the rear tire to clear the garage floor;

Pull off the rear schocks;

Now lower the bike lift; the rear fender will lower over the rear tire and check for clearance inside the rear fender...

I'd like to know how the 150 is clearing the drive belt. Did the previous owner put a newer pulley and narrow belt on it?

I feel a bit stupid i am new to the fxdl and i just looked and it is a 140-90-16 tire and not a 150 and redrubicon it just barely clears the belt i think it may have had some possible clearance issues at one time it looks to have some marks on the sidewall and the inside of the fender may have been ground down a bit to help with the clearance. I may go back to the stock 130 before i try to lower it. but i am going to try what fxd2003 said and measure it out with the 140 tire. thanks everyone for your suggestions again sorry for all the confusion.

No problem! We are all on here to learn from each other. I am actually working on a 1997. I upgraded the swing arm to a 00-05? with the newer brake caliper. I was about to buy a newer style pulley and belt so I could run a 150, but was worried about it fitting in the fender.

One thing you could do is install a True Track engine/trans stabilizer system. It would keep your driveline/swing arm from moving side to side under load and turning and would help eliminate the rubbing if its only during turns or under a load.

If your bored, here is the project I am working on. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...yna-build.html

Thanks chad for the info! I looked at the project its looking good! I may end up back to the 130 rear i really have to lower the bike im only 5'2 got to drop it a little bit. I can ride it now with the whole one foot down, but i will feel more comfortable with both feet down even if its just tip toes. i am trying just to lower the back, but i do envy the burly slammer kit it just looks too neat and i will loose a bit of comfort with that kit. good luck with the ex-con build. your 97 does not look to different than the 95. i believe they did change a few things for 96-97.

I have a '97 Wide Glide and used to run a 150 and required the following:

* Narrower belt (1 1/8" - which I have for sale)
* New pulley
* 150 tire

FYI - My unmodded swingarm can fit a 180.
