Default '06 Super Glide Feedback

Hi Folks:

I've been looking at a red 2006 Super Glide at a local dealer-- it has 27,500 miles and the dealer has all the service records since new. The IPB was replaced-- per a recall/warranty-- at 4K miles and all service since then has been routine-- fluids, brakes. So I'm pretty sure it's in solid condition. I took it for a short test ride and it rode well-- torquey and smooth. What other Qs should I ask or look for? Is the mileage an issue?

The dealer's asking $8K--and I'm not sure what a reasonable offer is for the bike, part. in this lousy market. Any guidance here is most welcome...

Also, I have a '97 Honda Nighthawk 750 that I'll trading in -- recently caught the Harley bug when I caught sight of the bike on the web-- it's a solid but unexciting bike that just doesn't stir my soul.

I'd love to hear what you rider/owners have to say.

Thanks for any help you can pass along.

Kenny

I would make sure the stator has been replaced since they come apart and not only the IPB, but the doweled cases installed along with the IPB under the warranty.

Do a search on the 2006 models. There was a discussion last week about what were issues with the 2006. Apparently, 2006 was a transition year between the 88ci and 96ci and they did not work all the bugs out like the poster mentioned aboved. Service records should tell the story.

The two big issues are the IPB and the stator. Some have not had either fail but others have had both fail. Good chance if the IPB fails again you will get help from Harley but the older these get I think the help will taper off. Definately ask about the stator, if it fails and you aren't a mechanical person it could get spendy. Other than that they are great bikes, six speed trans, better gearing than the later 96" bikes but with all the updated cam tensioners. Speaking of tensioners, the primary tensioner is a marginal design but for a stock bike they seem to hold up (at least mine has).

I think that price is a more than a bit high for that particular model and year with that many miles on the clock. Too many other/newer bikes on the market now. It is a buyers market. Dont settle. Get the bike you want.

The lean season is coming. During the winter months last year, folks were dumping bikes much cheaper than in the riding season.

Sounds like your not really jazzed about the bike anyway and 8k is alot of money in my book. I would never drop 8 large if I wasn't really jazzed.

Cheers,

Tom

Wasn't sure if he ment the ride he's trading in or the one he's trading for but you are right that if he isn't jazzed about the Super Glide he needs to move on til he is.

The bike in that auction would be a steal at that price, it'd be worth the flight and ride home!

Thanks for the replies-- let me clarify--I'm very psyched about the Harley! It's the Honda that doesn't light the fire. The Super Glide is a friggin bonfire...

As for the IPB -- is it a case where it may fail again? I thought that the replacement would fix it for a good while... No?

I'll ask abou the stator. One of the reasons I'm asking is that I'm not much of a mechanic. That's one of the real positives w/ the Honda. No mechanical probs ever. Change the oil/tires/pads, and ride.

Thanks again ---

It is a nice bike, but I think the price is too high. I picked up an 07 Low Rider with a Stage 1 setup and the bike had 3600 miles. I saw it on Craigs List and I got it for $9700 back in August and he even delivered it to my house. For the amount of miles on the bike I think you can do much better.

Yeah, I was mistaken. I should have read your post better. My comments about being jazzed/not jazzed were based on the statement you made about your honda. DOH.

I should really lay off the caffeine.

Also that auction is for a salvaged bike. Thats why I removed it from my post...Caffeine again.

I still think you could find a lower mileage, possibly later model bike for somewhere near your price point.

If you wait for the winter you may find a smoking deal. There was a guy selling his street bob for 9k and change the other day on this site, I think it was either an 07 or 08. The deals are out there, just have to find one when your ready to buy.
Good luck with your quest for the bike. FXD's are great bikes imo.

Cheers,

Tom

8K is WAY too much money for it.

Has the stator been swapped? It needs to be before you get it.

Otherwise nice bike...at 7K MAX.
