One thing I forgot to mention and I am not sure if it is true by you or not, but if you buy a bike or car, new or used from a registered dealer you will have to pay tax on that amount. Since mine was a private sale, well you know what I am getting at. That is something else that needs to be considered as tax on $8000 is no small chunk of change.....Good Luck...

Joe/Tom/Ackman & others--

This is great feedback. I think I'll roll the dice and wait for another month and then offer a good bit less than the $8K. But only after checking on the stator replacement. That's a new one for me. I'll see if there are others in that issues 2006 Dyna thread mentioned earlier.

And I gotta say-- this Dyna forum is a real goldmine of info. This more than anything is a wealth of knowledge/experience and wisdom--though sometimes salted w/ a bit of b.s -- that I need.

Thanks all

Kenny

I'd keep looking. Find at least an '07 with the 6-speed, 96 inch and a lot fewer miles. I bought mine with under 8k miles for $8660 last spring.

I bought from a dealer on ebay and was the only bidder. The thing was absolutely flawless, but bone stock. It's a buyer's market, so use that to your advantage.

Also realize that parts do add up, so I've got a lot more money into it than the original purchase price. This will be true for about any Harley that you buy. They are great stock, but seats, bars, controls and the like are quick to follow.

my local dealer had a 98 fxd with similar miles a couple months back for $8,500. If that helps your perspective on the price any.

Used to be the case here in Washington but they have changed it to "fair marker value". Now no matter what you pay for it they stick you for their set amount. I paid $2500.00 for my 89 F250 and they wanted to tax me for $4500.00.

Default 2006 Dynas

I have a 2006 FXDCI that I bought new that now has 16,500K on the clock, have had no problems with the IPB or the stator. I was real concerned about the IPB issue and did a lot of research, much of it on this site, but fortunately I haven't had a problem w/mine. Seems like it was hit or miss, some guys had 2 IPB failures before 10K miles, one guy had 50,000K on his w/no problems. Typical H-D new model rollout stuff, and I mean this goes back to new models since the 1920s! There are 2 primary chain automatic tensioner part #s for '06s, the newer one ending in an "A." Harley adds an "A" to new part #s in the same model year when they change a part during a production run. My bike is a 3rd quarter production model, so it has the "A" designation in its automatic primary chain tensioner. Dunno what the problem was with the original tensioner, some say it contributed to the IPB problem, others insist that the IPB problem is an alignment based problem during assembly b/c the '06 inner primary chaincase wasn't easy to align, which is why the '07 case has alignment dowels in its casting.

H-D told me this May that they issued a bulletin to their dealers that the '06 IPB problem doesn't exist. They wouldn't give me a copy of the bulletin, claiming that it was confidential between the factory & the dealer & insisting that the problem was only with a few bikes and is no longer an issue. Bullshit! I think that's just their way of saying they won't pay for any more primary chaincase upgrades to the '07 style dowelled cases.

2006 is a unique year, the only 88 w/a six speed. True dat to those who prefer the '06 gears to the later years, I've ridden both & the '06 gears are a bit lower, a bit more drivable, a bit more rev-able, which is appropriate for the 88.

If the '06 you're considering has had the IPB (and now that I know about it) stator issues taken care of, and you can get the bike for $7K or less, I say go for it, especially if it's been upgraded to the dowelled IP casting. If not, I'd probably look for an '07 or newer, just b/c it's generally a good idea to avoid first year models of anything made by anyone and you say you're not mechanically inclined.

Ride with Fury, and don't forget to rebel against authority!!!

Don't let the stator issue totally discourage you. Price it and you will see that it's not such a big expense. That being said the bike your looking at is about $1000.00 too high. The old style stator can also have the screws spot welded to prevent them from loosening up. This can be done as preventative maintenance if you want some reassurance. The '06 is geared a little lower because of the 88ci engine and loves to be reved up. Over all they are good bikes. I got mine cheap and figured that if the IPB and stator became an issue then I would just replace them when the time came. Now I just ride it and enjoy it, about 12k miles / year.
