If you're going to crack the primary open you need a shop manual and some special tools. You can finish the job with out removing it, just take the short shift rod out and attach the new one to the rear arm. You can push the shift shaft that goes through the primary towards the engine and out of the way. If you look at this picture you can see that the shaft is flush with the outer primary. The arm flopped towards the back and never interfered with the operation.

If you look at the clutch adjuster screw there is a big snap ring that holds the adjuster screw plate in. Take the snap ring off and remove the plate and screw. The clutch hub nut is behind that and it is 13/16 reverse thread. Take that nut off and the compensator bolt out, you will need a primary locking tool. First take the chain tensioner out. Slide the clutch, compensator, and primary chain off as one piece they won't come off any other way. Hope that helps a little, sorry no pics.

Do yourself a huge favor and spend the $60 on a shop manual if you are pulling the primary cover off. The cover has a tightening & torque sequence so you don't warp the cover.

another option is to cut the shifting rod that goes through the primary. Cut it behind the primary with a hacksaw blade. The rear end will fall through to the floor and the front part will pull through the primary. Then just put the cap that comes with the kit in the opening.
