Default tools for inner primary removal

what specialty tools are needed to remove the inner primary on an 1985 softail chain drive. it looks like I need a clutch basket puller and a good torque wrench but I would like to know before I get started. thanks in advance.

Well, your service manual will actually tell you all the tools you need, and I can't remember the socket sizes off the top of my head. If all you are trying to do is remove the inner primary, your best bet is to leave the clutch basket together as one piece and remove it, the primary chain, and the compensating sprocket all as one assembly. It's much easier that way. Unless of course you also have to replace clutch plates.

Just remember that the clutch hub nut is a left hand thread and you'll be fine. You will need a large foot pound torque wrench (manual isn't handy so I can't give a value, but it wouldn't be specific to your model anyway).

Also, you can use a solid rubber doorstop to lock the primary instead of any special tool listed. I've even seen the primary locked by wedging a pipe between the clutch hub and the compensating sprocket, but I don't like that solution too much. Just place the doorstop in between the primary chain and either the clutch hub or the compensating sprocket teeth so that it will prevent the primary chain from traveling in the direction it wants to go as you tighten/loosen the clutch hub nut and the compensator bolt/nut. You'll have to place it different for each one since they tighten/loosen in different directions.
