Question Custom Rear fender Help...

I have a 2002 Wide Glide and just purchased a custom chrome roller rear fender for it. I started working on it today and once all is pulled off I sat the new fender on and notice a gap of 1/4" between the each left and right strut. I did all the measurements and even asked around at the dealers and was told the 7 1/4" is the stock width so that's what I purchased.

I measured from strut to strut after everything was pulled off and its 8" and the fenders true measurement is 7 1/2", this leaves with me with as i stated above a 1/4" gap on both sides. At this point i figured i just need to buy the 8" fender but upon further research they only make 7 1/4" and 8 1/2".

Has anybody run into this? Is there something I can get that will fill that void? Should it even be there? I am fairly new at this stuff so any input is much appreciated and I'm at a loss, Any ideas.............

Thanks!

I used the same fender on my 1997 build and had to spread the fender struts.

You might need to find a different fender. If your bike has a 150 rear tire, it will be REALLY tight once you put nuts on the inside to hold the fender in.

I cant think of anything you could use to fill the gap without pulling in the struts. If you use washers to fill the gap between the fenders and struts, you will have a gap between the fender and strut covers.

I don't know about your particular aftermarket fender but my stock fender had some pretty thick spacers, probably around 1/4".I run an oversized tire and just spread the fender out to meet the fender rails.Either use spacers or spread the fender out or both you'll be fine.

+1 if your tire fits in the fender ,,,just space it out with some washers or what ever you can find that looks good,,,,

Its totally common for aftermarket sheetmetal to be generic or a little off. Its just stamped metal. Are you only talking 1/4 inch. Can you not just pull the fender apart that little bit before painting it. I know thats what I had to do when I installed my Shovelhead rear fender. They aren't titanium, they are pretty easy to manipulate.

Thanks for the input so far guys, Its off 1/4" on each side. It fits over the tire no problem so i figured i would end up just finding something for the spacers. Will the side pull out that much further? Best ways to do this?

Again, not familiar with your bike but if you have the inside fender strips with the threaded holes I'd just bolt that up and see how it looks. If it seems like too far of a stretch take a trip to you favorite hardware store and buy some spacers in assorted thickness's.Right now my stock fender is spread out all the way to the fender rails and it looks fine to me.

+1 on the strip and spacers....

The fender strips Ed is referring to are used in the Detachable Docking Hardware Kit p/n 53964-06B and on the 2006 FXDWGI. The p/n for this Bracket, rear fender mounting is 59484-06. Not shure if this bracket will fit your 2002 FXDWG.

Chrome spacers to be found at chromebolt.com and boltdepot.com:

My 06 have around 1/8" t0 1/4" gap between fender and struts, not noticible unless you are looking down into gap.
