Post Need Tach suggestions

Ride 2007 Dyna Street Bob, OEM 96ci

I'm currently running a Cobra Tach that sits in it's own billet riser top clamp with OEM mini apes. But in the future I am going to install Wild1 T-bars (no risers) and I need to purchase another tach setup.

Some Tachs say single fire ready, and some of those say they require an extra adapter kit to keep the Check Engine light off. Most of the previous said tachs are above $200.

Then there are quite a few nice looking mini tachs that come with 1.25" bar clamps that would work perfect for mounting on the T-bars and these are much less money, anywhere from $50 to $149. Some say need single fire adapter (which I've found readily available for $20 to $30) and some don't say anything except that they work on 2 cylinder bikes.

Would greatly appreciate any input on what has worked with setups you guys have personally tried out, and what adapter kits you had to buy (or not buy)

I'm liking this one

http://www.demonscycle.com/Electrica...-p5638883.html

but don't know squat about it other than what I see and that their tech support says it does require a single fire adapter and they don't sell it. I'm thinking it would probably work with most any single fire adapter I would buy.

From what I can tell all the single fire adapter does is hook to both coil trigger terminals (for front and rear cylinders) and then it runs both of these thru separate dual split parallel circuits. Said circuits consisting of a resistor of a certain ohm and a diode of a certain type. I know most diodes limit the amount of current so this is probably a protection device for volt spikes.
In any case unless someone can tell me more data it appears most any single fire adapter will work with a two cylinder compatible tach.

Now as to the interference with the Check Engine Light, I have not been able to find out what tachs do that with the exception of the Cobra tach. It says that it does and requires a special adapter to prevent it. The Cobra also does not require a single fire adapter, so it must be designed to expect only one pulse per rev (single fire).

I have an 09 Street Bob and I put the Dakota Digital on mine and love it! It has the speedometer, tach, as well as shift points, temp, 0-60, top speeds, etc. Its alittle more pricey but I love mine esp since I got the all blacked out one. Here is a link if you want to check them out: http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.c...rod/prd684.htm

Thank you for the reply. I looked at it, only problem it is well over $300 which is a bit more than I can pay right now due to other mods bought. Additionally it is over 3" in dia which would make it difficult to mount on the vertical riser bar of the T-bar. Which I should have posted earlier, I want to mout the 1.25" clamp to the vertical bar of the T-bar and then rotate the tach so it's upright and in between the two riser bars.
My T-bars are 10" rise so I don't want the tach mounted up that high on the horizontal bar.

Actually, you replace your speedometer in the tank console as the Dakota Digital is an all-in-one speedo/tacho... no bar mounted anything required that way. I'm wanting this particular option, but I have a few other things to pay off before I can justify spending the money.

Oh thanks that does sound sweet, I did not realize that. But the money is a bit more than I can part with now. At close to $400 I would rather has a TTS mastertune. Maybe after I win the lottery.

Like Stomper said it just replaces your stock speedometer and its does a lot more. If you were to spend money on anything this would be more important than cosmetics, just a suggestion.

I bought a $70 tach earlier this year that came with the needed single fire adapter. I assume I wired it correctly, but the needle bounced around so much (like 2,000 RPM bounces) that I was better at guessing the RPM's than the instrument.

I took it off the next day and rode without. I finally splurged and bought the Dakota Digital speedo/tach. Wow! What an instrument! 0 to 60 times, 1/4 mile times, high RPM's, digital tach and speedo, engine temp and whatever else is available at the touch of a button.
