I have attempted to use the search thread, unable to find an answer.
I have a 2003 FXD, when I start it up I am hearing what appears to be a ticking/tapping sound coming from the primary. I notice it the most as it sits and idles.
Any ideas? Maybe the chain needs adjusted? Thanks for your help....
get off the cover and get a measurement on it .anymore than 3/4 losen the nut take out the slack and tighten it up.reuse the gasket.it has to done now and then. not hard to do .you should have no problems. infact go to yopu tube and type in primary chain adjustment ........

Another idea is to install a Hayden M6 automatic primary chain adjuster in your primary. I realize it's not that hard to adjust the chain manually, but if it's too tight then it's all about premature wear on the chain and sprockets. Have it on both of my bikes.
Drain it, remove the outer cover and take a look. A loose chain will be the least of your problems. A loose piece of hardware that's just bouncing around will ruin your day when it gets between the chain and sprocket or sprocket and case. Look closely at where the chain adjuster assy. bolts to the inner primary. A lot of bikes around that time came with loose bolts here (I had one).
Make sure you are correct about the noise coming from the Primary. If it is actually coming from the cam chain cover, on the other side of your engine, you need to check the cam chain tensioners. You should do that anyway. They wear out in a totally unpredictable manner anywhere from 3,000 to 100,000 miles. It is a pretty easy job to do. The only specialty tool you need is a short 3/16" allen to get the bottom two bolts out, or you have to take an exhaust pipe off or loosen it. I just used the little bit you get in a set of them for a multi tip screwdriver. You can turn it with a wrench.
Good luck,
Don
