Default Another tire question

The HD 180 rear tire kit comes with a 180/60/17. Now there are lots of tires out there which are 180/55/17. Will the 5mm smaller on the aspect ratio do anything, or will it work on the stock rim?
Thanks
Jay

I think it was bberck that said there are only two safe 180's for the stock 17" wheel. From this thread:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...9-fhd-rim.html

“bberck
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The SE 180 and pirilli ND 180 are the only 2 180's that will safely go on. Other 180 tires require i wider rim. The SE 180 is slightly wider that the ND.
Outside of those 2 there are a few 170 choices or the stock 160.”

I learned the hard way. I had put on a Pirelli Angel 180 55 17 The Indy that put it on just about did'nt because of having trouble with mounting it. He got it on though. The next day it goes flat on me and the wife riding down the road, scary moment. I now believe the the two tires listed above are the only ones I feel safe with. After looking back I believe the Pirelli Angel 180 was made more for a rice rocket.

I'm looking to upgrade to a 180. The screamin eagle 180 wide tire kit is $279.95! They say it comes with installation brackets and hardware. Whats that? Why would you need that instead of just buying the tire and having it installed and balance w/ the weights.

Finally, which one would you guys say is better the Pirelli ND or Screamin Eagle?

HE bobber don't waste your money on that kit. Just another way for Harley to get more money out of you...my buddy and I just put a Night Dragon 180 on his 2010 SB with no issues. We also trimmed his fender and got rid of the brake light and ran run/brake/turns on the struts so we didnt need the brackets...But even if you kept the stock brake light all you would have to do is go to LOWS or HOME DEPOT and rig up a bracket to route the wires along the side of the fender instead of along the top because that is the only thing the brackets in the kit do. O and the Night Dragon gets better mileage than the SE from what i understand.

The difference in aspect ratio size is not 5mm, but 5%. The overall height of a 180/60 is 60% of 180 = 108mm or 4.25", a 180/55 is 55% of 180 = 99mm or 3.9". So the difference is 9mm or a total of 18mm on diameter.

I can't comment on the Pirellis, but the slight reduction in overall gearing would be no bad thing!

Not to mention the fact that the ND is about $100 cheaper than the SE Dunlop. I just put the ND on mine.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice man. I was wondering what kind of hardware they were including with the tire. Crazy how much they charge for the SE wide tire setup.
