Default shifter

i have a 1987 fxrc that was my uncles before he past away. i need to lift the shifter at least 4 inches before it will shift. anyone know what might be the problem. p.s. just joined and lov'n the site. you all have some great look'n scoots.

All i can think of is adjust the lever?

Take a look at the linkage ... there may be a problem with some of the parts ... bad heim joint, teeth busted off a splined shaft or shift lever ... something like that ...

Could be a combination of factors ....

Post a couple of photos of the shift lever (up close), the linkage and the shifter lever (transmission) ....

Check to see if the shifter is slipping on the shaft.

slack in the linkage or it is very poorly adjusted

The whole linkage moves with the shift and shifter is not slipping so must be internal? ? Thanks for the feedback and the kind welcome.
