Shifting Issue
ok so bike is new,,, from day one...sometimes when i shift from 2nd to 3rd the shift lever doesnt re set...i try to hit 3rd and the lever is still "up" and i have to double tap it for it to drop so i can shift...i took it to dealer ... and of course it didnt happen when ": they " rode it......im like if you know how its supposed to work... ie what causes the shifter to re set.... then ****ing check that...but they are just monkeys and dont get the logic....any ideas?
First thing to check is your linkage between the foot shifter and the transmission. Make sure nothing is binding and the rod going from the foot shifter to the trans is parallel to the bike and not on an angle. Also make sure the shift lever on the trans is not loose. After that it will be internal. Funny that it only happens from 2nd to 3rd.
As Mark said, but also make sure the splines on the shifter rod & foot controls are in good condition and the bolts for the shifter rod are tight.
I've read of several other forum members having the same problem (not just 2/3rd gear like you) - I took my heal shifter off, got the adaptor and run just a toe shifter which may be why I haven't had an issue....

this happened with the heel shift, after i removed the heal shift, and the same thing after i put on forward controls....i dont think its external...so the question is... what mechanism sets the the shifter after each shift, and then what is unique to 2nd and 3rd...?
the shifting mechanism ratchets.
that it happens only at 2/3 I'd really wonder about that- it could be internal.
restore to stock condition and keep taking in to dealer every time until fixed- warranty.
even if they find no problem get documentation with each visit.
as for shifting- it is a tractor transmission, don;t be gentle be very firm- as you would on a BMW airhead or a moto guzzi.
make SURE that your levers don;t hit or contact the floor board pads, that would restrict their full motion ( i've seen that before)
Story:
My Pal Allen put a "custom" awesome billet shifter linkage on...a big gorgeous hunk of billet.
It had so much mass that under braking, it would down shift him...he almost wrecked and the linkage became a nice garage wall hanger.

my 2012 Ultra Limited with 35k miles does that occasionally going from 1st to 2nd. I hit the heel shifter and it goes to N, then I tap it again and into 2nd. maybe once a day, maybe once a week, or every 3 weeks, since new??? Now I can feel it happening and I instantly tap the shifter again.

The shifter pawl spring is what returns the shifter but if that were broke you would be having this issue in multiple gears not just one. Tell you the truth I can't think of what would make the shifter not return in ONLY the 2-3 shift. There is nothing special about third gear.Maybe a shift fork is bent and making the shift drum hang up. My best guess without seeing it.
Check your shift levers. Sometimes if they are mounted too low, or flat looking, you will not have enough room for the shifter to ratchet back into position. It may shift the gear but won't reset for the next shift.
Mine does this on occasion, but I like the levers where they are so I just make sure I shift firmly and deal with it.

For my own satisfaction I would disconnect the front ball joint from the arm and make sure the front shift shaft is not binding. On a new bike it might be a bit tight. At the same time you can work the rear lever without the front part of the linkage connected and see if the centering spring seems weaker on one side than on the other. (re-centering from the up shift and down shift directions) If it turns out to be the front shift shaft a quick adjustment or lube job might fix the problem.
