If you place a block of wood under the stand or use a lift, you should be fine.

Nope, you should be ok as far as oil. I always inspect gaskets when I am changing things. I do not think there is ever anything wrong with replacing gaskets/O-rings regulary. Better no leaks than...well....leaks (due to worn gaskets). Its not like they are expensive anyway.

The short peice of 2X4 works fine,.. But to be sure just change the Derby when you change fluids..
And Like Geronimo said 'Gaskets are cheap',, besides some Derbys require special gaskets.. Mine did..

HD Part# 17361-05 is the gasket kit you can order for servicing. It's got Derby Cover and Primary Inspection gaskets, and O-Rings for you drains.

I had someone hold my bike when I replaced the stock derby cover. I did not loose a drop of oil.
