Default Progressive 440' Installed

I just picked up my Black on Black 440's yesterday. They look awesome and I can't wait to get them installed, but I had a question to ask those of you who have changed your rear shocks. After reading the installation instructions, it seems pretty straight forward on the install, but my question is "did you use a tourque wrench to retighten the bolts or did you just snug them up with a little locktite?"

Yeah, blue locktite.

Yes also on the Twrench. 75-85 ftlb for top bolt, 30-40 ftlb lower bolt.

You will break a cheap tool going to 80 lbs.

My top bolt was a torx, replaced immediately with grade 9 socket head.

Thanks for the reply Mud.

I just put in a call to my stealership and the service tech gave me the following torque specs...

Top Bolt 33-35 ft.lbs.
Bottom 35-40 ft.lbs.
243 Blue Loctite

Do you think you may have over torqued your top bolts? Not sure if this would cause a problem, but you may want to double check them in case.

my numbers come from the service manual on three different pages 2-2, 2-14, 2-67.

I would be curious where your service tech got those numbers. 33-35 strange.

I weigh about 205 and the wife weighs about 115, for her sake, I was thinking of getting the 440's for my lowrider. I found a set on ebay for 400 bucks. My question is. Are they worth it? Or would I be happy with the 412's?

Depending on what length you need, the 412's are a better value, while the 440's are more adjustable. You can read all about the differences on the Progressive website. Unless you're going to do a lot of canyon carving, which I doubt on a FXDL, the 412's should be a good match. My problem is that the 412's are not available in the length I want for my Dyna (11.5") so that leaves me either the 418's or the 440's, both kind of pricey, a good $200.00 more than the 412's

I got the 418's beacuse of the "sporty" nature of the shock. More travel then the 440, it's rebuildable, and you can adjust the compression dampening. Big bumps are till felt but it does hug the road much better.

Ameristo-give works suspension a look at. They'll make custom shock built for your weight and application. (dual rate springs- solo and dual riders)

Now I'm really confused. I may have to just suck it up and buy the service manual for my bike, which is probably a good idea anyway. Does anyone have a manual already for the 06 Bob that can post the specs???

I use a torque wrench on damned near every fastener. Loctite, too. If the book specifies a torque, then I torque to it. I tend to torque on the low side of the specified range if I'm torquing into aluminum. I've had too many threads blow out in my day to want to risk taking it near the max specified torque.
