cv carb tunning
So here's the deal. I have a "05" super glide. I put on a two into one pro pipe, a mikuni carb, and big sucker air filter. Ran that way for about 3 years. Then one day going down the highway, the bike wouldn't go over 60 mph. The road I was on was a 70 mile speed limit. I went back home determined to ride that day. So I put my stock cv carb and air filter back on. I forgot how nice the stock carb was. Not nearly the throttle response as the mikuni, but very nice overall. Then I replaced the stock air filter with a K&N air filter and drilled some hokes in my backing plate. Well the bike started running very lean, took forever to warm up, and popped often, for obvious reasons. I felt like I couldn't adjust the air screw enough (already took the plug out). I did a LOT of research on Keihin Cv carbs. There is a lot of good info out there. And it all said roughly the same thing. Rejett the carb. That I should take out the stock jets and put in a 190 main jet and 45 slow jet. Well I took the float bowl off and took out my stock jetts. You guessed it, already had those jetts in it. So talking to my local bike shop, they told me to turn the air screw out 3 turns or put in a 48 slow jet and 1.5 turns out with the air screw. I opted for the bigger (48) slow jet. And kept the stock 190 main jet. So far so good. Warms up a lot quicker, and only one pop in two days. I still have to fine tune, but it's running good now. I also took the mikuni apart and cleaned it out. It just had a clogged jet. But now I have options for a cab.
