This is the can from my '97 WG. We took it off when we installed the turbo system in '99. Since then, it's just been hanging around in my basement. Just for fun, I decided to see if it would fit on the new SE air cleaner. Sure enough, it was a simple swap. Just about a perfect fit. But it still looked kinda boring. And I didn't want the old emblem on there, either.
I got rid of the old emblem and cleaned it up. You may remember the old air cleaners had a slot at the top for carb clearance. I turned it upside down so the slot is at the bottom. It doesn't show well in this picture, But I drilled some additional 3/4" holes in the bottom for better air flow; although it probably won't make a bit of differance. I gently scored the chrome with 600 grit sandpaper. That gives the powdercoat something to grip, and gives it a slight brushed look. Add a little translucent red powdercoat, a new SE emblem, and here we are! Cost me <$10, and about 2 hours time. Looks great in the sun, the brushed surface really shines out.
The emblem is from H-D catalog. Got it for about $8. It simply sticks on wityh adhesive, just like the stock one.
The battery cover was done the same way. I also did the electric and coil covers on the other side (started with chrome pieces). I have a points cover that hasn't been coated yet. I'll probably do the stock horn cover, too.
bob just make sure its not hitting your tank with the slot at bottom.i have the evo cover myself .one day looking at it from sitting could see where it scratched underside of tank.flipped the notch back up no more hitting tank. i run just plain chrome no emblem on mine, cant stand the foootball cover myself
