I have a 06 Streetbob. Lately I have become concern with oil levels. One week ago I checked under hot check methods and noted that the oil was down 2X marks on the dipstick. I tooped it off to full. After 400 mile of riding on the Trail of Tears, and on week later I check it out again under hot check method and noted it was down 1x mark on the dipstick. Where is the oil going? I dont have any apparent oil leaks, the outside is dry as a bone. How much is too much and would be considered High Oil Consumption
I have been told by someone whose opinion I respect that you really shouldn't add any oil unless the level is at or below the ADD line on the dipstick. And when you do, you shouldn't add anymore than is necessary to get the level 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance between the ADD and FULL lines. If you are adding to the FULL line there is a fair chance that you are blowing oil out the crankcase vent when the oil gets up to operating temperature. You can confirm this is happening by examining your air filter.
I have also been told that engine oil consumption on the twin cam engines may not stabilize until 5000 miles or so and that consumption of 1 quart per 1500 miles is considered "acceptable" by the MOCO. That seems like allot to me, but that's the line I got from several techs when trying to figure out what was going on with an oil-thirsty Buell I had. BTW, the oil consumption decreased significantly between 5-6K miles as I was told it would.
I believe there were issues with valve seals (?) on 05 models that resulted in excessive oil consumption on some bikes. I don't know if this is an issue in 06 models or not.
It's been 3,000 miles since the last service. Well, that would also be the first service. The bike only has 4,000 miles on it. The stick still reads full.
63k on mine. I don't have to add any oil between changes. It's always somewhere above the "add" line. I don't worry about exactly where as long as it's above that line.
