Well, I found out the problem with the wheel, and thought I'd post an update in case anyone else ran into this problem...
The wheel I bought was supposed to fit a 2000 SG... not so much. I took it to my Indy, which noticed right away that it was actually for a '99. He said it's kinda common that vendors ship the wrong wheel, and then people end up shaving their caliper to make it fit.
He ended up lacing me another wheel, with a new rim and stainless spokes, to my existing hub. He also replaced my wheel bearings. When I went to pick it up today, he said he would trade me even-steven for the wrong wheel I purchased. Needless to say, it was a deal! Now, I'm back on the road....
Lesson learned - beware what you buy online and double check the year...
I could have sworn that 99 down wheels take tapered bearings and not the sealed type, and 2000 up take sealed bearings. Even the rotor flange should be different between 99 and 2000. Am I wrong?
I ran into problems as you did with my 2000 FXD also. I want to go 21" spokes did the research and finally ordered the over $400 rim and got one that had a flat spot and was not trued at all . I found problems with dual rotors and single disc then the might need narrow caliper. Then the 21" being 2" bigger around and might not fit the fender and might have to lower the front to get the handling right, what a bunch of crap. I think building the rim is probably the best bet even though the 2000 Sportster and maybe the Softtail are supposed to be the same wheel. I would think others here have done this being how the spoke looks so much better than the mag, especially when I already have the solid rear wheel. Seems like a lot of hassle, I sent the wrong wheel back and got my money, but now apprehensive about ordering another when the information out there is sketchy. From what I have seen Buchannon and some of the specialty wheel makers are way expensive. Hell I just wanted a spoke not a $4000 set of mags. On another note , does anyone know how to clean the dirt and road grime from the grey mags? I have tried many products and nothing so far has done a good job.
OK I have a 2000 FXD Superglide, I ordered a 21" wheel from TC BROS . I had a 80/90x21" Michelin tire mounted and it fit perfect. I had to use the disc from my stock mag. That wheel is Chrome Front 40 spoke 21"x2.15", fits 2000-2003 FXD and Sportster 2000-2007 SKU 115-0052. it's centered and clears the fender, caliper clears the spokes. Hope that helps. Almost forgot it has a billet hub with sealed bearings and uses the same axle the mag took.
