Default 21" Wheel Problem

So, I am on the last legs of installing my new 21" front spoked wheel, salivating at the thought of taking it out for a ride on what is finally a good weather day.

But, I install the front caliper, and instantly notice there's a problem. The spokes are rubbing against the back of the caliper. What am I missing? Is there another style of caliper that I need to use with a 21"? It is a 2000 FXD, with a stock front end. The wheel is 2.15" wide.

Maybe the spacers are on the wrong side.

When looking at the front of the bike, the wide spacer is on the right, and the slim is on the left - correct?

Correct. Thin one on the opposite side of the caliper. Do you have the adequate spacers? You may have to check on that.

Thanks. I'll stop in the dealer tomorrow and see if they can tell me anything about different spacers. I just used the ones that were there when I took off the 19" inch wheel.

Well, I called the dealer earlier this evening, and they essentially stated I'm SOL. I had been doing some reading about spacers to push the rotor out just a bit from the wheel, but they stated that those were dangerous and did not recommend doing it. I like the look of the 21" (not to mention the money I spent), but I'm starting to think maybe I should have just stayed with my 19".

Ugh!

I bet if you could check your original wheel you would find that the rim was not centered on the hub but was offset enough so that the spokes cleared the caliper.

I laced my wheel and had it trued at the Harley shop. The tech insisted that the rim had to be offset slightly to clear the rotor according to factory specs. This made the tire offset from being centered on the fender by about a quarter inch. Luckily there was enough room to shift the rim over and still clear the caliper, so maybe you can just shift the rim over enough so your spokes will clear.

If you retained your original hub and used the right spokes then either it is laced wrong or not centered/trued correctly. There are plenty of people on here that have done this mod without the issues you are experiencing

If its not a chrome caliper you can shave some off the back side that rubs for extra space. Good luck.
