Default starter lockout defeat?

good AM group,
My friend has an '07 Dyna WG and it has a starter lockout unless the bike is in neutral. If the bike stalls in traffic, it must be put back into neutral in order to restart. needless to say, this is a safety issue as far as I am concerned. Does anyone know how to disable this feature so the bike can be started in any gear with the clutch pulled in? Thanks for your responses.

Well, until you find an answer, just pull in the clutch. I'm willing to bet that it's either 1) must be in neutral or 2) must have clutch in while in gear.

Not sure about this but I'm assuming that it's worked by the neutral switch that operates the neutral light. You will find it on the transmission case above the trans fluid fill hole.

Shorting the wires to the neutral switch will make the bike think its always in neutral and you might be able to start the bike in gear. I dunno what else this might mess up, maybe nothing, but you will have the neutral light on all the time and so won't be able to tell when you really are in neutral.

Agree with the above. My 2010 Dyna will engage the starter in any gear *if* I have the clutch lever pulled. If your friend's bike won't do this, maybe the clutch switch needs to be fixed.

Note that the switch that does this on the 2010 Dyna is in the hand controls itself. This is why 09 and later bikes require a different lever design to retain this feature. I have used 08 and earlier levers on my Dyna WG (long story) and the only "issue" is I can only start the bike in neutral no matter what position the clutch lever is in.

Yoy should be able to start the bike in any gear as long as the clutch is pulled in.
Did he change the levers to aftermarket levers? Some don't have the tang to engage the starter switch.

My 07 SB operates the same way ater installing chrome switch housings and levers. The problem is there is a piece of metal on the clutch lever that is supposed to contact a micro switch in the clutch lever housing. If that piece of metal is not contacting the switch, the bike will only start in neutral. You can fix the lever to make sure it contacts the switch or you could bypass the switch (solder the two leads that go to the switch together) this would allow you to start the bike in any gear. The down side to this is you can accidently start the bike in gear without having the clutch pulled in and it will jump out on you. Could end up bad.

My 06 will start in any gear regardless of where the clutch lever is. Must have been new for 07.
