I've not had much luck with doing large thread inserts myself since I don't have access to a good drill press. I tried fixing a blown spark plug recently and it went... badly. I spent a full day dickin with it and wound up having to buy new heads anyway... not an experience I want to repeat. Of course, now I'm opening up a whole hew can of worms with this lacing thing, but I have what it takes to make that work: patience. Thanks for the suggestion though.
As you have been advised, the lacing part is not too difficult and will be even easier if you have another laced wheel laying close by to copy. You will need to make, beg or borrow a truing stand. Go look at one. You can do a good job without a dial indicator, just make some fixtures and measure the straightness and concentricity with feeler gauges. Sure, you can do it on the bike but it will double the effort. I've built the stand, laced wheels, found it an overall satisfying experience and gained some great bragging rights.
gbm, thanks for the advice and the pep talk. I feel better having heard from someone who's done this and survived to tell the story. I'll let you know how it went.
