The only places on my 2007 Bob where there is any rust is the top of the right rear shock and whatever that chrome part is (see photo) just inside of the support that holds the exhaust.
I guess I can replace the shock, but if I just want to remove the rust (especially on the other part) and prevent it from getting worse, what's the best way?
hey fella that chrome swing arm cap can be popped off with a screwdriver, im going to clean mine up a little and hit it with some gloss black, i got the some spot rust
I would try some ultra fine steel wool with a little chrome polish on it. NO elbow grease here, just very lightly rub it working very slowly. 4/0 I believe it's called. Got some tucked away here somewhere after the last move or I would go look. 1 bag has lasted me a few years. Good luck.
If I am not mistaken the "chrome" swingarm cover on my bike, a 2007 FXDC, is actually aluminum. I thought mine was chrome for the last 4 years until a month ago.
I could never get it to shine with the simichrome. So I hit mine with some Mothers aluminum polish and whatta-ya-know, I had a crap load of black come off...oxidation. If I am not mistaken chrome does not release the black tarnish... So I would try cleaning it with some aluminum polish.
Also the rust on your shock bolt shroud is really bizarre, that is really weird to see rust like that on chrome.Grumpy might be on to something with the battery leak.
Two possibilities come to mind.
1: you had some chemical spill on your chrome or
2: it was seriously gashed leaving exposed steel.
