So I decided to pull off all my tins on my 97 FXDWG to pain them. (more pics to come),I reassembled everything and now I cant start my bike.
Factors:
1.I clipped the fuel gauge wires (it was broken anyway)From the gauge side.
2.Replaced fuel line and filter (yes its facing the right way) I can see fuel in the filter its just not getting to carb?
3.Replaced vacuum line to petcock
4.The bike will start with a squirt of starting fluid into the carb but it will only run for a few seconds.
5. I pulled the tank off again to make sure I wasn't pinching a vacuum line.
I tried to search this with no luck.
Please help before I strangle my bike to death!!!
My manual says to buy a newer bike, but I don't like that idea!
How much fuel did you put back in the tank? Plug off the vacuum hose to the carb, using a source of vacuum apply vacuum to the petcock. Turn the petcock to reserve and try to start the bike again. Just thinking maybe the old diaphragm in the petcock may have gone bad, during the tin work.
I can get the fuel filter full when I apply vacuum to the petcock (separate line while siphoning) but when I start the bike the carb doesnt pull the fuel over. It just sits in the filter. Does that sound insane? Would the petcock diaphragm control the carb vacuuming the fuel over to the carb? seniorsuperglideE8 ...I am going to give that a try and see what happens. Thank you for the suggestion.
Check fuel cap, if not venting properly it too can prevent fuel from flowing, remove gas cap and try running the bike, myself i would check vacuum lines again and make sure it is properly connected.
seniorsuperglideE8...I think you had it right. I hooked up my brake bleeder to the petcock and the bike ran. I guess it must be the diaphragm. That was a lot of work to find that out. I guess I have to get one at the stealership too. Oh well I guess replacing my gas and vacuum lines was kind of fun. I will update this post when I replace the diaphragm for future noob searchers.
