Steering head bearings too loose
2009 Super Glide Custom, Front wheel shakes at 40 MPH with no hands on handlebars.
I tighten my steering head bearings last week after I took it to a local independent HD mechanic, thinking that my front spocks were not ajusted properly. He suggested that the head bearings was too loose & suggested that I run it up to 50 MPH, turn loose the handle bars, let the bike coast down & if the front end start shaking as it got down to about 40 MPH, the bearing are too loose.
Well that's what mine did, so I put it on the stand and tighten it several times, riding it after each adjustment. Finally I got it too tight & it handled poorly (felt like the front tire was half flat), backed off one click, perfect. The front end dosn't shake at 40 MPH with no hands on handle bars now.
