Default Electrical Problem

I have a 2004 Dyna Super Glide with an electrical problem. I've changed the single stock speedometer to a Harley dual speedometer and tach over a year ago. I went out to start my bike and I've noticed that my battery has gone dead. I've recharged the battery and started the bike and it ran like a top. When I turned off the key I noticed that the speedometer light is staying on. Any ideas to repair this problem????

It sounds like the pin on the speedo that needs a switched supply is getting power from an unswitched source so it's on all the time. But you said you did this a year ago and this is just now happening for the first time?

Sounds like it is actually in the accessory position. If you are sure you have it in the off position, I would recommend checking the ignition switch.

This happened to me on another brand bike years ago. Turns out I had dead bugs putting a high resistance short across the contacts in the switch.

I would ohm the switch connections.

Hope this helps.

I've tried turnng the switch off and on moer than a few times. The speedometer light is the only one that is not shutting off.

Not to sound smart-assed but as a quick/temporary fix, have you considered removing the speedo light until the real problem is corrected?

You've got a constant power source hooked into that speedo if your light is not going out when the key is off. You need to go over your wiring again and figure it out. If you've got a service manual with the wiring diagrams in the back it should be really easy to trace it down. You need to ensure it's hooked into a switched source and not a constant source.

When only the speedo light is on, it sounds like the Accessory position of the ignition switch. If the switch is not bad, then something in that circuit is wired wrong.
