I had a black one that was slower and Harley repainted it red. Sometimes they get it wrong. Go figure.

That happens. Sometimes hideous colors don't sell, so they repaint them black just to get them off the lot. I know they charge extra when they paint over the original black (check prices at your dealer, you'll see.) I wonder if the OP had to pay the surcharge twice?

Muffler bearings or kinifler pins. That soulds to me like the culprit.

Did you try reseating the muffler bearings?

Does mine feel different because it is not fully broken in?

Thanks in advance!

Jeremy,

Did Dad initially ride his bike a bit harder? If so, he seated his rings and broke the bike in correctly, but not per HD's misguided recommendations. Do you baby your bike? That is the recipe for a weak engine.

Perhaps Dad's bike was previously test ridden by someone with a heavy hand and this was all it took to make his bike more susceptible to making power.

You see, the first 20 to 50 miles are critical for getting those rings to seat. It's a short window of opportunity and if you miss it, it's not going to be available again.

For the first 50 miles you should either be accelerating hard or decelerating hard, you want the piston rings to have a constant pressure on them in order to wear in before the cylinders start to glaze.

I believe there is a site created my Motoman that addresses break-in and I suggest you check it out.

Oh, yeah, either way the bike will continue to break-in and run better with a few thousand miles on it.

I have to agree with HemiOrange above me. Read this...

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

What i am planning to do is head out to a slow country road, have pops follow me in the truck with his hazards on. I'll wail on the bike for about 20-30 miles then just drive around aggressively. I just dont want someone running over me from behind when im allowing the engine to break to low speed. This should ensure the 2011 FXDC i have waiting on me in the garage after this last tour in Afghanistan is a screamer. Good luck, and dont be discouraged, your bikes engine is still basically brand new and will continue to "settle in" for the first few thousand miles.

(This isnt my first bike, but i have broken in sport bikes using this method, as well as the manuals method. The method above imho is far superior.)

Or simply break it in the good ol' fashion way. With todays machining, break in periods aren't nearly as ciritcal as they use to be. Not to mention, the mototune has been the subject of much debate on just about every automobile forum I've ever been on for many years now (motorcycle and car alike). You'll get knowledgeable people discussing why you should and shouldn't do it. Breaking in your bike per recommendations isn't going to harm your bike either.

Did he take the reflectors off his bike? That could be why his is faster.
