Default Adjusting shocks-they keep turning

probably a stupid question but I cannot find an answer. I am trying to stiffen them up and I am turning them the correct way (clockwise) but they keep turning. I thought they stopped when they are at the stiffest setting? Please help bike will be loaded for a four day trip and I have to get this done ASAP.

Sounds like you've gone way past the max preload setting. You need to turn the adjuster all the way back (counterclockwise) until it stops, which is position #1 (lowest preload). Then turn the adjuster clockwise 1 step at a time until your preferred preload is reached - position #5 is max (only 4 clicks beyond position #1). Be sure to use the same setting on both sides. Hope that helps.

They do not stop at the stiffest setting, they just drop right back down to one. You'll have to look on the under side and count how many spots to move up and double check it when you're done. Then you're good to go. I'm assuming you are using a spanner wrench on the bottom of the shock where the little holes are?? Not spinning the spring right??
