I have a 2001 wide glide. Started acting funny. Changed plugs. Then I changed the petcock. The problem seems like fuel. At low speed it sputters and pops. When I stretch it out it is okay. Could it be the plug wires or coil? Thanks,Sutto
just a couple quick questions to grasp the situation a little better. Has the bike been sitting? if so for how long? if it has not been sitting when was the last time it ran good and what have you done to the bike since as far as maintenance or changing parts?
And if its been setting, is the fuel fresh or was it treated before it sat. I'd try treating a full tank of fuel with Seafoam. Run the bike at varied rpm and use the entire tank of fuel. Check for intake and exhaust leaks. See if that doesn't help clear things up for you.
Jets are clogged.
check your tank and note how much rust is in it, then kreme it. yes, it's a pain in the butt but I'll charge you $150 +parts if I do it. rebuild the carb, prolly no reason to change anything including gaskets, just clean it and put it back together. Replace the manifold gaskets while you have the carb off since you have mad skills to get this far anyway.......
It all started back months ago. Kids rode 4 wheelers across my new drive. Instead of unloading the AR 15 in the dirt, I backed the bike out and let the neighbors hear the pipes. Lots of RPM's. Put it up, went out of state to work for three weeks and it has never been the same since. I did treat the fuel with seafoam and there is no rust in the tank. There are no knocks or anything. Do you think it may have jumped time? Thanks.
I doubt it jumped time, it would be a lot harder to start and it would likely be running rough at all rpms. Next time just leave your bike alone and go ahead with the AR-15, I like that idea best. I'm starting to think that when you wrapped up the rpm, maybe a piece of carbon let loose leaving a sharp piece of carbon that's getting hot enough to cause some detonation (sputters and pops) at lower rpm. More Seafoam mixed in your gas, and a repeat of the high rpm for your neighbors is what I would try next before buying parts. I think a little hair of the dog that bit you may still be the ticket...
