Axle Question
Got 27,500 miles on the Bob and replaced my bearings with some Japanese bearings before the replacements that went out at 15k do the same thing.
My question is now that I’ve seen what all is inside the wheel – help me be clear on something. The grease on the axle from the factory – is that mostly there to keep it from seizing up and being difficult to get in and out?
I mean, the inner part of the bearings and that removable inner shaft basically stay stationary on the axle and the outer part of the bearing spins with the wheel, right? All of the ‘spinning’ is done by the bearings themselves?
I only ask because the axle seemed like it was a bit on the dry side, but that’s how it has always seemed to be when I pull them. None of the spinning is dependent on that grease right?
I just removed and replaced the front wheel on my Bob...the grease on the axle is anti-seize and meant only for ease of install/removal.
You are correct on the operation. The axle doesn't move.
If it was a bit dry, the worst you will experience is the axle being tough to remove the next time you need to do it.
Really if you spread around what was already there with your finger, it should be ok.
Keep the shiny side up!!
