Default Vin Number Question

I just purchased a 2004 Low Rider and was doing some research on the VIN number. In my research I found the 5th and 6th character are supposed to represent the model of the bike. My letters are GN. I was only able to find one site which showed GN as any type of model (the rest failed to even recognize this combo existed). The website that did have it listed it as "Low Rider (Japanonly).

Does anyone know the story behind that or why the GN "model" in a VIN is hard to find any information on?

According to the owner's manual for my 2010 Dyna your info is correct. The 'GN' in position 4 indicates FXDL (Japan only). Leaves me with a big question mark, too!

It makes for a fun puzzle to solve while the rain is falling and the bike sits in the garage. I'm really curious about the story/meaning behind the "Japan Only".

In 07 the Japan models had a different rear sprocket than the US models. Might be clue.

That's interesting to know. A different rear sprocket, I wonder why that is? I wonder what differences there might be on my bike compared to other Lows.

I've spent a few extra hours looking into the matter and am coming up with nothing on the googleweb. The search for information will continue.
