Default Yet another fork lock issue

Ok I have an 04 Lowrider that ever since I bought it used, the fork lock wouldn't turn at all.
I finally got bored enough to take it apart and it's just a
rotating lock with a flat on it. No pins going into the lower triple tree that are broke or out of align to lock fork.
However the triple tree steering stem has no groove in it to enable the lock to turn into a locking groove when rotating the lock rod.

Shouldn't that steering stem shaft have a half moon groove in it above the lower steering head bearing to lock the fork????
With the stem out of the frame the cylinder rotates back and forth fine.

There is physically no way for the lock to turn against a flat steering shaft with no groove for it to go into. Do I have the wrong Steering Shaft in it?

have you tried turning the handlebars all the way to the right, then try to lock it?

I think you mean all the way to the LEFT.

Unhappy

Yeah I moved it every which way, the cylinder can't turn with no slot or place for the round lock rod to go into the shaft above the lower bearing.

My hope was that someone familier with the same lock setup verifies that the steering shaft on theirs does have a machined place removed on the steering head shaft for the lock cylinder to turn and lock in one position. Then i will know how to proceed with either new or machine mine for the lock rod to turn and lock.

My o6 dont have a groove, you just have to turn the forks to the left and line the pin with the hole. you might have to line it up with a small screwdriver first but once you have and see where to use the lock you should not have anymore problems with it. just look on the left side at the lower tree from the bottom while you are trying to lock it.

When someone trys to lock it from the right side and then turns their bars to the left is what causes the locking pin to get out of adjustment.

ok, not sure if this willl help in the least, and i am not familiar with how an 04 is configured, but here i go anyway.

i have a 09 fxdc, and i had the pin from the lock mechanism shear off while in the locked position.

on the top of my lower triple tree there is a grove for this pin to sit in. i tried, real serious like, to get the pin out by putting the lock in the open position and working the pin back up, but that just didnt work out.

i ended up drilling a hole through the lower triple tree so the pin could fall through and free up the steering mechanism.

Is the pin on the actual lock assembly? on mine I see no pin, no holes for the pin to fit in, nothing on the lower triple tree at all other than the fork stops and looking from underneath, you see nothing at all nor anyplace to stick a screw driver in. ???????
I found a used triple tree assy on Ebay from a 97 Dyna convertible that shows and has a notch in the shaft thats right at the lock level. I'm totally confused what to do now, is the lock wrong or the shaft? Am I looking at it wrong or missing something?

ok,

i turned my bars all the way to the right, and it exposed the left hand side of the lower triple tree. there is a hole not far from the edge on top of the lower tree that the pin sits in when locked, and also a grove from the hole to the edge of the tree. (the grove is very short from the hole to the edge).

there was a pin on the bottom of the lock. (i am doing this from memory,) but i recall a pin a couple of inches long, a little thinner than a pencil that came out of the bottom of the lock and sat in the hole when in the locked position. my pin had sheered and i found it impossible to lift it up enough to get it above the depth of the hole.

i am not sure if its the same on an 04 though.

Lock Problem fixed. Bought a new steering shaft for my bike and It has a half moon slot cut into it at lock level cut vertically into shaft. Lock shaft turns into slot when bars all the way to the left. Works perfectly, had wrong steering shaft in it with no groove cut into shaft.
