Post Bob goes Bagger

Well ok, not a bagger, just a bagger wanna be. But none the less I do have a windshield and bags now.

I love my new Rifle brand windshield. It's very well built. I got it cut to just the length I wanted after measuring. Paid $326 total, including the mounting hardware, the custom cutting and shipping. Would have been around $295 for standard length. Got a better price on it thru this retailer than I would have straight thru to Rifle.

I've had it up to 85 mph and I have no wind buffeting at all. It is soooo much more comfortable riding at high speeds now. Even in a heavy crosswind riding is just more comfortable all around.

I still wear ear plugs but it's not the same hurricane blast in my ears with the shield. I got these neat ear plugs at Amazon for $13 including shipping that are great. They have a small hole in the middle. They block the wind noise but you can still hear better than other ear plugs I've tried.

I know a lot of you will say why didn't you just buy a RK and that's a fair question. I can only say I liked the Bob and most RK's I looked at were out of my price ability. The PGR rides I participate in are just too hard to ride long distances at high speeds without a sheild and the bags come in real handy too. The Bob don't look as lean and mean as it used to, but then neither do I.

Anyhow here is 2 pics of my Bob goes Bagger.

Windshield and saddlebags, on a Dyna.....seriously, what the hell is wrong with you!!! You'll ruin the bikes lines.... yada yada yada.

I gave up a long time ago listening to a bunch of short riders dictate what goes on my bike. Your bike looks great, is practical and can go damn near anywhere you want in comfort. Who needs a barge like a Road King to get you where your going. I load up my bike with that stuff as well. Especially in the winter when the cold air gets to me and I need to haul the extra gear to keep warm.

Also my bags are just cheap naughahide bags. I stiffened them with plexiglass sheets (from Ace Hardware) that I cut up myself and mounted with aluminum nuts and stainless button head bolts. They look kinda like studs don't ya think ?

Kinda tricky to drill all the holes in Naugahide and have them all line up correctly. A sharp awe punch helps to start the hole. First punch and drill two holes while placing the plexiglass sheet on the outside.

Get enough bolts mounted to hold it while drilling. Then punch and drill the rest. It helps to hold a small wood block inside the bag to brace against flexure, (being carefull not to go thru the wood block and into a hand).

Then when you get all the holes drilled remove it and mount it to the inside. I put some clear silicone on the bag side of the plexiglass to give it more stiffness.

Here as you can see these are simply cheap throwover bags that I removed the throwover harness and made my own aluminum angle mounts that bolt onto the fender bolts. There is also a drag specialties lower bag brace going down, but those can be made also especially if you don't need it chromed.

With the Dyna you have to either get out past the shocks or stay a minimum of 1-1/4" behind them or when you hit bumps the bottom of the shock will rise up and hit the bags.
