Default Starter bike?

Hey How's it goin! New to Forum and I plan on buying a Harley as soon as I get back from deployment in Sept. I was wondering if anyone started out with A Dyna as their first bike. I've ridden plenty of dirtbikes before, and my moms sportser 1200, so I know how to ride. Im just worried about the weight and handling. I'm 6" 190lbs.

Thanks for any input.

I don't see a problem with a Dyna. Didn't ride for 20 years and went straight to a Street Glide. I'm 6' 2", 195 lbs. 3 years later, still happy with the bike.

Thank you for serving, and have a safe trip home. Sounds to me like you don't need a 'starter' bike. After owning 3 sportsters (XL883, XL1200S, XL1200R) and 3 Dynas (FXDX, FXDLI, FXD), and a Norton Commando and a BMW R75/5, my guess is you will find the Dynas more comfortable. After all, you can still ride your mom's 1200 if you want to. Just don't swap rides; you might not get the Dyna back.

You're going to want forward controls at 6'. I'm 6' 3" and was really cramped with mids. Can always change them if the bike you like has mid controls, but might as well just get one that already has forwards.

+1 with Sevendcmc. Also started with a sporty, just got my street bob 3 weeks ago. Rode the sporty from a buddys house back to my house to sell it and laughed all the way home. I dont know how I ever rode that thing for three years. Go straight to the DYNA save your self some money in the long run. just my .02

I started on the sporty and moved to the Dyna. See if you can test drive the Dyna and make a comparison. Get what you like and feel comfortable on.
