I along with many others am not a fan of the silver engine on the 2009 Street Bob. I have found and read some interesting posts on this forum of people who have painted their engines and the results look great. Powder coating would be awesome, but it is such a task with time and money. Painting is just what I am looking for to give it a little better look. I assume that there will be some touch up from time to time, but that just gives me another reason to be out in the garage.
Couple questions for anyone who has done this...
First, I have the black denim paint on the bike and love the flat black look. One thread I read the guy used Dupli-Color and it looked great, but as far as i can tell, Dupli-Color does not come in a flat black option for engine enamel. Would the DE1634 Low gloss black look good??
Some options for Flat black engine enamel are:
PlastiKote
VHT
Rust-Oleum
Moeller
have any of you used any of these brand for engine enamel? Recommendations? They all have a 400-500 degree heat resistance.
Also, I saw on the Dupli-Color it comes in 500 and 1200, does anyone know the difference and does it apply to all brands.
Thanks for the help. As soon as I get started with the cleaning and prep I'll post pics.
Have you looked at the Harley flat black texture pain they offer, i have used it on my motor with great results and lasted for years, they also offer the wrinkle finish but personally i don't like the look
09 is a year only with the raw cases. Ride it in pride,
However I just did a quick retouch on my Black Rush mufflers and I used the VHT
header flat black and it looks great.
I put on 4 coats 10 minutes apart then cured it by running for 5 mins cooling and letting it smoke some then again. It looks real nice and now easier to maintain when those unexpected scratches occur.
I won't paint my 09 engine. paint is an insulator and I want that engine to cool.
Personal preference I guess. I just do not like the silver. I actually did not pick it out, my wife surprised me with it a few years ago for my birthday. I cannot complain about that at all, the silver is just not a color I love. I will paint it black, just wanted everyone's thoughts on the brands.
I am interested in this too. I seen people paint their engines I wonder how much work that entails. Slowly but surely I have been painting a few parts here and there. So far, air cleaner, battery band and air horn cover. I use engine paint from rustoleum.
While these are for a Y*m*h* project it does give an example of two different paints. the cylinder is painted with PJ1 satin black engine and case paint which is good to 500F and this stuff is tough, you can pour gas on it and it wont stain or lift. The pipe is Duplicolor low gloss black engine paint..........I have not run these yet but I hear that if layered on very thin it will hold up even on an exhaust.
