Default WD-40 silly question

Shipping my bike overseas next week & its gonna be in container for 2 months.
I wanna prevent rust/corrosion

One of my friend recommended to spray WD-40 all over the bike including paint surface/seat/engine/wheels/ I mean the whole bike

Other guy suggested me to spray only on the metal parts.

Some suggestion pls,
Can I spray on the entire bike (will it affect my paint and stuff?

shrini23,

I shipped my bike from MD to HI, took about a month inside a crate.

I would not spray wd 40 on anything that isn't metal. that is just me. WD 40 attracts dirt. I would wash and either, wax or spray harley gloss on the bikes painted surfaces.

I would get some s-100 corrosion protection spray for your wheels if you have spokes and liberally apply, stuff is like magic imho.

Good luck,

Tom

Check with a marine dealer/supply store. They may have a better type of lay-up spray that is design for the water.

CRC makes a marine protectant, 6-6-6, shock works pretty good and it's made to stop saltwater corrosion. I would put that on the metal surfaces if you are concerned but I wouldn't spray the whole bike with it or any other product for that matter. Whatever you choose to protect the metal from corrosion is probably going to be petroleum based and that will not be great for the paint and will really mess up rubber components like tires, belts, and motor mounts. Just think of it this way, when Harley ships it's bikes for sale overseas they don't arrive as rust buckets so why would yours. It's not like they use some special airtight container. They just crate it.

WD40 would be good on the motor and trans. I use it just to make it shine when I detail it. As for the chrome, wheels and paint I would probably try the Honda spray polish. I use that in another name "Biker Spirits" but it's the same stuff. I ride where it rains a lot and lived out here for 7 months now and I'll ride all week in the rain (sometimes). Clean the bike on the weekend with the spray polish and I have no rust anywhere on the bike, not even on the spokes.

I'm sure the S100 would be just as good, but I wouldn't put WD40 on anything other then the motor % trans area.

I'd probably go with the S100 products, it's a product designed for motorcycles. If they let you have fuel, treat with a fuel stabilizer. If not maybe fog the fuel tank with fogging oil.

The S-100 corrosion protection spray is your best bet IMHO. It works great at protecting your bike from the elements. WD-40 will dry up and not protect it. I used to use it for engine parts and have been let down a few times.

Just because it's designed for motorcycles doesn't mean it works. My dad went 10 yrs without S100 and no rust. He used the older S100 to shine the bike back up and after a week the bolts on his motor had rust, so he stopped using it. I've heard the newer S100 doesn't do it anymore. Now his FXR superglide is 21 yrs old and car wash soap and water does the trick for him and simple green on the gray motor.

You can use Cosmoline to protect everything on the bike. Honda, Toyota all of them spray their autos before they put them on ship. They wash it off when it arrives here in the states.

Just Google, Cosmoline. Lots of info.
