Does anyone know how long my 20W50 synthetic primary and tranny fluid would take to go from the nice golden color of new, to the Guiness color mine is now?? Reason I ask is I was 385 miles beyond my 1k service on my 11 FXDC, and I was a bit alarmed at the color when I drained primary for forward control install this past weekend.
Both still have a slight golden tinge to them on the finger tip, but in the mason jars both are much darker, and the primary fluid has quite a few shavings in it yet, the tranny does not have nearly the amount of metal in it tho.
Only engine related mods are the VH Big Radius pipes, until tomorrow when I put on the stage 1 AC and Xieds. My riding habits are not hard, and at least half those 385 miles were highway, the temps here have been mostly in the upper 80's since the service was done.
I would think the primary with the clutches would look dirty fast. I run atf in primary and it dont seem to get really dirty looking like regular oil does.
Thanks Gentlemen, I am good to go now after reading these replies. My buddy had just told me a story where the same dealer I used for the 1K service, neglected to change his fluids a few years back... I got a bit suspicious. Thanks again!
I use synth 20W50 and try to change every 2-3k. Typically my primary oil gets about 3/4 as dark as the engine oil. Tranny oil typically looks like I just changed it. I wouldn't have expected the primary oil to be as dark as it sounds like your is. Metal shavings clearly isn't a good thing. You might simply be dealing with some break in, so maybe you just need to do another primary change in 500 to make sure that things have settled.
