Default Primary question

No this is not another "What oil to use thread"... well I guess it is, kinda. I was at the stealership today and I was asking the service guy how much for a fluid change (Primary, tranny and main oil) he said that it would be around $110 just for labor and about $80 for oil if I went with syn3. But he recomended that I do not use syn3 for the primary because it may cause the stator to burn out he said to use Formula+ for the primary. Has anyone heard of this before?
BTW I decided to change my own oil, I am going with Mobile 1 20-50 for V-Twins in the engine and primary. Mobile 1 79w90 for the tranny.

Only thing I have heard about stator and lube issues is ATF in the primary, some people run automatic transmission fluid in their primary cave, and I have heard that the detergents in the ATF break down the winding epoxy and cause them to short out....now I have only heard and read this...havn't seen it though.
I use synthetic in my primary cave and have had no issues.(i use AMSOIL-20w-50 in both the engine and primary).
and thats what I have heard

I have also heard that ATF can cause problems. One guy here said that after just a short ride, 100 miles or so, he had to change it. It was giving him problems and smelled burned when he drained it.

I have been running ATF in my primary for quite a while. No problems at all. Some clutch companies recommend ATF and I really don't think they would be doing that if they were not sure about it. Never heard of anyone having problems with stators because of ATF. Stator problems have been around a lot longer then guys running ATF.

I was thinking the same thing. That is why I asked the question here.

I buy the regular old HD primary lube by the case from V-Twin. I could save a few bucks with ATF or spend a few more and use Syn3, but the black bottle's been doing fine for a few decades now.

I am in shock however about a $110 labor charge for a fluid change. That must include your own fluids being drained by a working girl as well, right?

What generally happens is guys go to the auto parts store buy ATF and it is the wrong kind... there is ATF TYPE F and ATF MERCRON. The TYPE F works great... the Mercron will burn out. It is that simple... read the directions.

You are correct type "F" the new type "F" has a "Fa" designation...
