Default Finally dyno tuned.

After installing Vance & Hines short shots, a SE stage 1 air cleaner, and a PC-V with a "canned" map, I finally pulled the trigger on a custom tune, thus completing what I originally set out to do late last season, but failed to accomplish.

After browsing for tuners I came across Dyno-solutions.com out in Brookfield, CT. Initially, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I figured a business that solely provides one service, custom dyno tuning, can't be a bad choice for a tuner. I rode 2.5 hours, arriving prior to my estimated time, John, the owner/tuner, took me right in. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the quote on quote shop. It was a single car garage housing a Dynojet 250i machine. Everything was neat, clean and professional. John explained exactly what he was going to do prior to doing it and made it super easy to understand even for a novice like myself. All in all the procedure took 1.5 hours while he made the necessary adjustments, tailoring my super rich generic map to ideal parameters for my set up. Ultimately, he leaned out the map at various ranges to bring it closer to optimum settings. My goal going in was to firstly, improve gas consumption - considering fuel is at a ridiculous high - and secondly, to make sure the bike is running well. Even though it felt fine to me, I still wanted to have it tuned for ease of mind.

By the 9th pull, with the bike running hot and the tire slightly sticking to the drum on the dyno, he was able to squeeze out 76.08 HP and 86.59 TQ.

John has been tuning for over 7 years and specializes in sport/performance tuning.

Excuse the quality of the print out, I got caught in a massive downpour on my way back, twice.

That is a very straight line in the lower graph indicating A/F ratio, but what A/F ratio does the dotted line represent? It looks pretty lean to me, but that is what you asked for. A healthy and cool running ratio for a Harley runs about 13:1, not the "optimized" 14.7. I suggest running an oil cooler and a fan for slow summer city drives along with a temperature gauge.

It also looks like your rev limiter was turned back a ways. Hmmm.

Yeah, your gas mileage should be optimized (?), but I can't see where your original settings were "super rich"! In fact both the before and after A/F adjustments look near identical.

All in all I think that you would have been dollars ahead to have left your canned tune in place. Save the dyno blast for when you actually modify the engine. The canned tunes, as you can see, for the PC's are pretty spot on!

Dynojets Power Vision did not have a fuel map for my set up and none ran well on my bike. Even Fuel Moto's maps had me running super hot. Dyno Solutions was my solution.

I figured I could leave the canned map without any issues, but I decided that it can't hurt to spend the bucks and have it looked at. I'm not planning on further enhancing the bike in the performance aspect. In layman's terms the original map was running relatively rich through the entire rpm range.. as John was sampling the A/F at various ranges it was under 13.0, in the blue zone. From what I recall the green "recommended" zone fell between 13.0 - about 13.6. Essentially, what he did was lean the map out to fall between light rich to healthy green. I presume the line on the graph represents the "green zone" but don't quote me on it.

I appreciate the comment. I'm a novice at all this so excuse my ignorance if something didn't sound right.

I agree with Rdmption about a dyno tune with several mods and no engine work. My canned tunes were way out with lots of decel pop and poor gas mileage. With the dyno tune everything leveled out and you get the rear cylinder tuned as well. Most canned tunes only tune to the front cylinder. Mine tune was $250, but my bike has ran much better.

Once I get a cam and some head work, I'll do another tune. I'm going to wait on installing the larger jugs until I need a rebuild and then maybe I'll get intense.

Hemi's suggestion about the oil cooler and fan is sound advice. These hot days can really stress your motor.

Are you running synthetics? I gained a couple horsepower more with using a thinning fluid and longer intervals between changes. Syn3 is good, but I went with Amzoil.

I totally agree about the cooler and fan.. the hot weather is a killer, especially since I'm running a windshield and lowers. Also, great suggestion on synthetic. I'm going to give it a whirl as soon as the weather improves here in NY and I can head over to the local HD dealer to buy some.
